Trio Goya - fortepiano, flute, cello
‘The performer at the center of this concert and of the group itself is the splendid British-American fortepianist Maggie Cole. In her hands, the delicacy of the fortepiano is no impediment to the power, even muscularity, of the music written for it. She combines a marvellous technique with superb musical instincts and good taste.’ The Boston Globe. Wadhurst can only agree with this statement! The musicianship and understanding between all members of the Trio produced a concert of memorable charm and entertainment. The alternation oftrios and duets provided an opportunity to relish the differing qualities of sound that the various combinations produced [and provided an interesting contrast for those of us who later heard the Trio Goya in a violin and cello combination with fortepiano in a very different acoustic at FInchcocks].
We are really privileged to have had such musicianship brought to Wadhrust for the last ocnert in the season. - and lucky to have had good weather for the delicious outdoor tea of scones and cream that a gallant army of helpers provided.
For the final concert in the 2009 Festival, Trio Goya performed:
Haydn - Trio in D, HobXV:16
Allegro, Andantino piú tosto allegretto, Vivace assai
Johann Nepomuk Hummel - Variations alla Monferina Op.54

Haydn - Trio in G Hob XV:15

American born Maggie Cole enjoys an international musical life
playing and recording on harpsichord, fortepiano and modern piano. Resident
in England, she is best known through numerous recitals on BBC Radio 3 and
appearances at leading British festivals. Abroad, she performs regularly
in Europe, the USA and the Middle East. In addition to a busy solo career,
she enjoys duo partnerships with Michael Chance (counter tenor), Mark Padmore
(tenor), Philippa Davies (flute – with whom she has recorded JS Bach
flute sonatas) and Steven Isserlis (cello). She also performs frequently
with The Nash Ensemble, Britten Sinfonia and USA-based group The Sarasa
Ensemble. With Sarasa she has been able to extend her love of teaching to
the development of a program which brings music, improvisation and poetry
into facilities for youth offenders.
Maggie has made many diverse recordings which include Bach's Goldberg
Variations, Soler Keyboard Sonatas, Poulenc's Concert Champêtre and “Mozartiana”,
music for cello and fortepiano with Sebastian Comberti. A CD of Haydn trios
with Trio Goya will be released this autumn.
Sebastian Comberti was born in London, and studied in Italy with Amedeo Baldovino and later with Derek Simpson and Sidney Griller at the Royal Academy of Music, from where he graduated in 1977.In 1976 he became a founder member of the Bochmann Quartet giving concerts throughout the British Isles and in Europe. In 1983 he was appointed principal cello with the London Mozart Players, with whom he appears frequently as soloist, as well as being an active member of the LMP Chamber Ensemble. Other Chamber Music activities have involved the Divertimenti Ensemble, Hausmusik, Soloists of the OAE and Trio Goya. A keen interest in historically informed performance has resulted in participation with a great many of London’s period instrument groups. Sebastian frequently appears as principal cello with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and soloist with the Hanover Band. His recordings include a number of CDs of the Sinfonia Concertantes of JC Bach with the Hanover Band, while as a member of several chamber groups he has recorded for CRD, EMI, Harmonia Mundi, Hyperion, Meridian, Phoenix and RCA. In 2001 he founded Cello Classics, a label dedicated to recordings of rare repertoire and recordings for the cello, which has won plaudits worldwide.
Philippa Davies: since her celebrated performance of Mozart’s Concerto
in D major at the BBC Proms in 1988, Philippa Davies has gained an international
reputation as one of the finest flautists currently performing. She plays
and broadcasts throughout the world at international festivals, and performs
concertos with such orchestras as, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic
and BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the English Chamber Orchestra, the New
Stockholm Chamber Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, and the London Mozart
Players.
Chamber music has always been a passion. Philippa is a member of the Nash
Ensemble and London Winds, has a partnership with Maggie Cole, performs with
Arpège and with her group, Philippa Davies & Friends. Her schedule
also includes many world premières and numerous distinguished composers
have dedicated works specifically to her.
Her numerous recordings include Mozart’s entire original concertos
and quartets, a solo disc The Romance of the Flute and Harp, Bach flute sonatas
with Maggie Cole and a recent recording of William Alwyn’s flute music.
